Solar Vaccine refrigerator in Ethiopia

Client - For Ethiopia

Project Overview

For-Ethiopia is a small charity working to relieve poverty and sickness in Ethiopia. The charity identified a need to improve access to the cold chain in the rural health clinics in Ethiopia and approached Solarsense to help them achieve this aim.

Implementation

Dulas supplied a VC65 medical refrigerator cabinet together with a solar system which was then installed by Solarsense. Frequent users were given training on the system to ensure knowledge was available in-country. The refrigerator is being used to supply much needed vaccinations at the Beso rural medical clinic in a remote village about an hour’s drive north of Addis Alem.

The system was purchased with money raised by Bradgate Surgery (Brentry) and Solarsense, and imported with the kind assistance of the Oromia Regional Health Bureau. It was transferred to the site by the FDEA (For Development Ethiopia Association) whose Manager, Mrs Worknesh Daba, made the whole project run like clockwork.

"All is going very well – the nurse loves the fridge! It’s proving very, very useful and is much better than the kerosene fridge. We are now looking to fund-raise for the school to have a PV system."
